Conservative reactions to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and image are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
